RA Beltelecom, being an owner of the national public data communication network BelPak, takes care of its development and operation under License No. 34 granted by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the Republic of Belarus.

To extend the range of services offered by the data communication network and ensure its nation-wide coverage, an international tender for construction of an extended BelPak was held in 1995. The tender was won by Sprint International, USA. In mid-1996 the network.

At present the network consists of 18 switching nodes equipped with TP49XX Series switches (Minsk and 5 regional nodes) and TP8010 switches (12 regional nodes). The provide for subscriber connection both in synchronous and asynchronous modes at a rate up to 64 000 bit/s. .Data communication protocols : X.28, X25 and Frame Relay. The total port capacity of the network is about 1000 ports. Communication with switches in Minsk and regional capitals is carried out over 2 048 Mbit/s digital streams (E1) established on fiber optic links.

The network has direct X.75 connections to the networks in Russia and Poland. By transiting these networks any global data communication network can be accessed. The expanded BelPak may be used both for subscriber access and as a backbone network for providing transport services for a corporate network to be established. The Network Access Control Center and security system ensure efficient control on the network and its protection against unauthorized access.

In addition to the X25 network, Internet access nodes were installed in Minsk and all regional capitals in 1996. They were equipped with Cisco routers and servers. At the beginning of 2001 the total port capacity of the notes amounted to 485 (with no account of the password-free switched access system). In 1999 a nationwide password-free switched access system was installed for accessing the Internet. The system is based on access servers AS5200 and AS5300 of the total port capacity of 420 ports.
